NEET 2020

“National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test – Undergraduate” is also called “NEET-UG” or “NEET”. NEET is a medical entrance examination conducted in India. It's a test to determine the eligibility of students for admission to undergraduate medical programs, including MBBS.

Until 2019, to get admission to any of the medical universities in India, NEET was mandatory. NEET was not applicable for MBBS admissions in:

• All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS); and
• Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in Puducherry.

AIIMS and JIPMER were allowed to conduct separate medical entrance test. From 2020 onwards, MBBS admissions to all the medical institutions are made through NEET. This change complies with the enforcement of the National Medical Council Act. From 2020, to take MBBS admission in AIIMS and JIPMER as well, you need to qualify NEET.

Since 2019, NEET is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). NTA is an independent organization established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India (GOI). NTA makes all the arrangements for student registrations for NEET, the conduct of the examination, and declaration of results.

NEET 2020 Schedule & Updates ↑

NEET in 2020 shall be held on May 03, 2020 (Sunday) on a PAN India basis. Here are important dates to remember for NEET 2020:

NEET 2020 Eligibility ↑

For NEET admission, a student must be at least 17 years of age. Also, the student must have scored a total of 50% or more in the subject of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Other details on NEET 2020 eligibility are as under:

* For PwD category students, the minimum aggregate marks requirement is 45%. For students falling under the category of OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer)/ SC/ ST, the minimum aggregate marks requirement is 40%.

** Under the regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 25 is the upper age limit to appear for NEET. Further, for students falling under the category of OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer)/ SC/ ST/ PwD, the said regulations provide relaxation of five years, making the upper age limit 30 years for them.

Presently, the matter about the upper age limit is pending in the Supreme Court. Until judgment, the Supreme Court has provisionally allowed students who are above 25/ 30 years of age to appear for NEET. Accordingly, the medical career of students, who are above 25/ 30 years of age, will be affected by the final judgment of the Supreme Court.

NEET 2020 Language Options ↑

The question paper of NEET 2020 will be available in 11 different languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

You have to decide your preferred medium for NEET while filling the application form online. If you opt for a medium other than English, you will be provided with a bilingual NEET booklet in selected regional language as well as in English.

How to Apply For NEET 2020 ↑

You must apply for NEET 2020 online. No applications in paper form are accepted.

Here is a step-by-step guide to applying for NEET 2020:

Step 1: To apply for NEET 2020, visit the official website of NTA NEET, i.e., ntaneet.nic.in.

Step 2: Click on “New Registration.” Carefully read on-screen instructions and procedures prescribed for NEET 2020 online application.

NEET 2020 Application: Points to Keep in Mind

1. In the application, mention the mobile number and email address of yourself or your family member that you can access anytime. NTA will send all the important details, updates, and information regarding your application and NEET exam on the registered mobile and email address.
2. Only one NEET application is allowed per candidate. Do not submit more than one application. If you get some error while filing the application or while making the payment, don’t panic. Contact the NTA NEET team. Contact details of the NTA NEET Team can be found on the contact us page of NTA.
3. Before submitting the final application, please review all the details that you have submitted. Double-checking the application before submitting will remove the possibility of errors. Also, it would be better if you get your application cross-checked by a family member or a friend before submitting it.
4. Make sure that the scanned images of your photo and signature are clearly visible and are not blurred.
5. We strictly recommend you submit the NEET registration application and pay the fees well in advance to avoid the last-minute rush. NEET registration well before the deadline will keep your mind at peace, and you will be able to stay focused on your studies.
6. In the application form, mention date of birth, name of father and mother as per the 10th class certificate/ mark-sheet.

NEET 2020 Admit Card ↑

NTA will release NEET 2020 admit card on March 27, 2020. In case of having any issues in downloading your NEET admit card, you can contact the NTA NEET helpline.

NTA NEET admit card helpline will start on March 27, 2020 and will be open until April 10, 2020. The timing of the helpline will be from 10:00 A.M. to 05:00 P.M.

Your NEET exam center will be mentioned on the NEET admit card. Once NEET admit cards are available, download your copy on time. After downloading, get color print copies of your admit card ready and paste passport size photograph on it. The photograph should be a copy of the same photo that you used in your online NEET application.

NEET 2020 Exam Pattern ↑

In NEET 2020 exam, a total of 180 questions will be asked. Three hours will be allowed to answer all the questions. Effectively, to answer every question, you will have one minute.

For every right answer, four marks are allotted. For every wrong answer, one mark is deducted. For unattempted questions, no marks are allotted/ deducted. With all right answers, the NEET score can be as high as 720 (180 right answers with four marks each).

NEET 2020 Exam Day Guidelines ↑

Carry All The Required Documents For NEET Exam

We suggest you keep all the required documents ready at least a week before the day of your NEET exam. Following is a list of documents that you need to carry on the day of your NEET exam:

• A print copy of your NEET admit card with passport size photograph affixed on it. A copy of the same photo shall be used that was uploaded in the application form.
• A copy of the same passport size photograph as uploaded in the NEET registration form. It will be pasted on the NEET attendance sheet.
• Copy of proforma downloaded with admit card with post card size color photograph affixed on it. A copy of the same photo shall be used that was uploaded in the application form. In the NEET exam hall, you need to handover such proforma to the invigilator.
• Original Photo ID [PAN Card or Driving License or Voter ID / Passport/ Aadhaar Card (with the photograph)/ Ration Card]

Besides the above documents, you are not allowed to carry anything inside the NEET examination hall. Not even a pencil box or water bottle is allowed. To write the exam, you will be provided with machine gradable sheet and ball point pen in the NEET examination center.

NEET examination centers open 2 hours before the exam time. So, you are allowed to enter the examination center by 12:00 p.m.

Sitting starts at 01:15 p.m. The exam starts at 02:00 p.m.

Entry to NEET examination center closes at 01:30 p.m. It means no students are allowed to enter the NEET examination center after 01:30 p.m.

You must make sure to leave for your NEET examination center on time. Make provision for traffic, weather conditions, and other commute factors.

Do Not Carry Banned Items Inside the NEET Examination Center

Following items are not allowed inside NEET examination center (as mentioned in NEET 2020 Information Bulletin):

a) Any stationery item like textual material (printed or written), bits of papers, Geometry/Pencil Box, Plastic Pouch, Calculator, Pen, Scale, Writing Pad, Pen Drives, Eraser, Calculator, Log Table, Electronic Pen/Scanner, etc.
b) Any communication device like Mobile Phone, Bluetooth, Earphones, Microphone, Pager, Health Band, etc.
c) Other items like Wallet, Goggles, Handbags, Belt, Cap, etc.
d) Any Watch/Wristwatch, Bracelet, Camera, etc.
e) Any ornaments/metallic item.
f) Any food items opened or packed, water bottle, etc.
g) Any other item which could be used for unfair means, by hiding communication devices like microchip, camera, Bluetooth device, etc.

Make sure that you do not carry any of the banned items inside the examination hall. Carrying banned items constitute Unfair Means and Practices.

Follow NEET Dress Code

On the NEET Examination day, you need to follow the NEET dress code. While there is no strict dress code provided, key takeaways from NTA instructions on NEET dress code are as under:

• Wear light clothes with half sleeves. Long sleeves are not permitted.
• Slippers, sandals with low heels are permitted. Shoes are not allowed.
• Candidates appearing in a cultural/ customary dress should report at least an hour before the last reporting time, i.e. 12.30 noon. It will ensure enough time for proper inspection.
• In case, due to medical/ other unavoidable reasons, you are not able to follow prescribed dress code, prior approval of NTA must be taken. Ensure such approval before the date of the issue of admit cards.

Maintain Discipline

Be disciplined. Do not use any kind of unfair means in the examination. NTA defines Unfair Means and Practice (UFM) as:

“an activity that allows a candidate to gain an unfair advantage over other candidates.”

If any candidate is found to be using unfair means, s/he will be disqualified from NEET for three years. Besides, in accordance with the law, criminal action can also be taken against defaulting students.

To stay away from the UFM penalty, make sure that you follow all the rules and regulations in respect of NEET. Also, do not involve in any unfair practices like cheating.

Beware of Your Conduct in Examination Center

The conduct of NEET 2020 will be recorded in video format. That means all the students’ activities in the NEET examination center will be recorded and will be available for future records.

While giving the NEET exam, be sure to follow the student code of conduct. Don’t use any unfair means and don’t indulge in any unfair practices, else, NTA may disqualify you from the exam.

NEET 2020 Result ↑

NTA will declare the NEET 2020 result on June 4, 2020, on the official NTA NEET website. A copy of the NEET result document will also be available in your DigiLocker. Digilocker is free could storage provided by the Government of India under the “Digital India” initiative.

NEET 2020 Qualification Criteria: NEET Percentile ↑

In NEET, there is no such thing as “qualifying percentage” or “cut-off percentage.” NEET passing score is determined by the “qualifying percentile” or “cut-off percentile.”

We will discuss the “NEET qualifying percentile” or “NEET cut-off percentile” in a moment. Before that, let’s have a quick look at qualifying percentile for NEET 2020 which is tabulated below:

Important Note Regarding Qualifying NEET

NEET 2020 Information Bulletin states:

“Merely appearing and qualifying in NEET (UG) - 2020 does not confer any right to the candidate for admission to Undergraduate Medical Courses. The selection and admission to Undergraduate Medical Courses seats in any Medical Institution recognized for offering Undergraduate Medical Courses is subject to fulfilling the admission criteria, eligibility, rank in merit list, medical fitness and such other criteria as may be prescribed by the Government of India, respective States, Universities, Institutions, and Medical/Dental/Ayurveda/Siddha/Unani/Homeopathy Colleges.”

Percentile is not just based on your own percentage. It is determined by the percentage of other candidates.

Your success in NEET is not determined by “how well you performed.” It is determined by “how well you performed in comparison to other candidates.”

To be in the 50^th percentile doesn’t imply that you need to score 50%. 50^th percentile means that you need to outperform 50% of the candidates who took the NEET exam. That means your NEET score needs to be higher than 50% of the candidates who participated in the NEET examination.

Similarly, for being in the 40^th percentile, you need to outperform 40% of the candidates who participated in NEET. It means you need to perform better than 40% of the candidates. 40th percentile means that your NEET score should be in the list of top 60% performers in NEET.

In competitive exams like NEET, the number of seats is fewer than the number of students hunting. So, there is no such thing as “NEET passing marks.” Your success in NEET is determined not only by your own marks but also influenced by how much marks other students have scored. Answer: No. Application for NEET 2020 registration can be filed online only.

Answer: If you are an Indian Citizen or an Overseas Citizen of India, you need to qualify NEET to get admission to study MBBS Abroad.

Question: Is NEET mandatory for MBBS Admissions in India?

Answer: For MBBS admissions in India, NEET is mandatory for all medical students. For MBBS Abroad, NEET is mandatory for all the medical students who are Indian citizens or overseas citizens of India.

Question: Is there any negative marking in NEET?

Answer: Yes. For every wrong answer, one negative mark is allotted. In other words, for every wrong answer in the NEET exam, one mark is deducted from the total score.

Question: How many students will appear for the 2020 NEET exam?

Answer: As per our estimate, more than 15 lacs medical students will appear for the NEET entrance exam 2020.

Question: Do I need to send a print copy of the NEET application form to NTA?

Answer: No. you do not need to send a print copy of the NEET application form or any other documents to NTA. The procedure to apply for NEET 2020 is completely online.

However, for your reference, we recommend you print a copy of the NEET application confirmation generated online. Also, keep a copy of the fee payment receipt for the record and future reference.

Question: Will I get NEET Admit Card by post?

Answer: No. NEET admit cards will not be sent through the post. NEET admit cards will be available online for download on March 27, 2020 onwards.

Question: Would the NEET 2020 be difficult?

Answer: Every year, an increasing number of medical students apply for and appear in the NEET exam. Due to stiff competition, NEET 2020 would be a challenging exam.

Question: What is the age limit for NEET 2020?

Answer: To appear for NEET 2020, you must be at least 17 years of age by December 2020. That means if you are born on/ before December 31, 2003, you are age-wise eligible for NEET.

Question: What is the syllabus for NEET 2020?

Answer: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology subjects of the 11th and 12th classes constitute the core curriculum of NEET 2020.

Answer: The cut-off for NEET 2020 shall be released by NTA on June 4, 2020, with the declaration of NEET result.

Question: How many times can I attempt NEET 2020?

Answer: NEET for 2020 will be held only once on May 3, 2020. So, you can attempt NEET 2020 only once.

Question: Are MBBS admissions in AIIMS and the JIPMER conducted under the NEET in 2020?

Answer: From 2020 onwards, MBBS admissions in AIIMS and JIPMER shall be based on NEET.

Answer: No. NEET 2020 will be conducted only once on May 3, 2020.

Qualifying NEET and MBBS Admissions ↑

Only NEET qualification doesn’t entitle you to get admission to the MBBS Program of any medical university. The reason is that every year, about seven lacs students qualify the examination. However, only about 70,000 medical seats are available.

The number of students who qualify NEET is ten times higher than the number of medical seats in India. That makes MBBS admissions highly competitive, even for NEET qualified students.

Also, medical universities abroad consider NEET score as a test of your medical IQ. The higher, the better. So, if you want smooth admission to the MBBS Program of a medical university in India or abroad after your NEET qualification, aim for the top score.

Students who qualify low in NEET examination have very poor chances of getting MBBS admissions in comparison to students who score high marks. It is worth repeating that NEET qualification is not a guarantee for MBBS Admissions.

To get one of the limited MBBS seats, you need to score well enough to get your name on the cut-off list. Besides the NEET score, universities can also include other requirements under their respective MBBS admission eligibility criteria.

MBBS Admissions After NEET, At Lincoln American University
